MVHS performs 150th aquablation case

On Tuesday, July 8 providers from Upstate Urology at Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) performed the 150th Aquablation case at the Wynn Hospital.

Aquablation is a minimally invasive, robotic-assisted surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. The procedure, which was performed by surgeon Hanan Goldberg, uses a high-velocity waterjet to remove excess prostate tissue, guided by real-time imaging. This heat-free, less invasive technique aims to relieve urinary symptoms associated with BPH, while minimizing potential damage.

“One of the many advantages of Aaquablation is that this is pretty much appropriate and suitable for any kind of prostate, any size, any shape,” said Goldberg, urologist with Upstate Urology at MVHS. “A lot of the men we see for this procedure have tried medications or some other kind of treatment, and then there are many men who haven’t tried anything because they were afraid of side effects or other complications. But for the majority of men, this will be the first and final procedure and they will not need any additional procedures after aquablation.”

Unlike other procedures that use heat to remove prostate tissue, the use of a heat-free, high-powered water stream can help minimize the risk of heat-related complications that can occur.

“Clinical studies show that aquablation provides durable symptom relief, with many men experiencing significant improvement in urinary flow and reduced BPH symptoms that last for years,” said Seetharam Bhat, a urologist with Upstate Urology at MVHS.
